Week of April 15, 2019

It is truly an exciting time for the HS Band Major at SOA!

Mr. Kerr wants everyone to pay attention to each of these important “Notes” from him and
the Band Room:

I am working to complete hearing and evaluating the recorded auditions for the 2019-2020 band classes. I
hope to have them completed by Monday evening and results to be posted very soon.
The Seniors will begin working on their graduation performance this week. Their first rehearsal will be during
lunch this Wednesday, the 17th in the band room. This will be their last performance as a group, and they will
be working to make it a special and memorable one!

The HS Chamber ensembles and the Jazz Lab Band and HS Jazz Combo are performing at the SOA Spring
Showcase. This Wednesday, April 17, at 4:30 to 7:30 pm. The students should have already received their
schedule last Thursday and Friday. This is a free event and there will be ongoing art showcases and food trucks
on campus.

Here is the schedule and order of the Middle and High School Band groups:

4:30- pm High School Clarinets & Flutes
5:00- pm 6th Grade Band
5:30- pm High School Tuba & Horn Ensembles
6:00 pm- 7th & 8th Grade Band
6:30 pm- High School Jazz Lab Band
7:00 pm- Jazz Combo

The Spring Concert is coming soon! The program will be Tuesday, April 30th at 6:30 pm, and will feature a
combination of band classics and lots of lighter fare that I’m sure everyone will enjoy. There will be lots to see
and hear, and there are some guest artist coming! Details will be forthcoming.

The Wind Ensemble will be performing at the SCBDA Concert Band Festival on Saturday May 11th, at Irmo HS
near Columbia. This event is by invitation only and is limited to High School Bands who received “Superior
with Distinction” (Straight I’s) at their regional Concert Performance Assessment. Bands who are accepted
must change at least one of their selections from the previous event. Our program has been changes to a
much more difficult selection, the “William Byrd Suite”. This is considered one of the great classical works for
band. The Wind Ensemble will perform at 2:00pm at the Irmo HS theater. The Band Boosters are securing bus
transportation for the WE to and from Irmo, SC.

The Jazz Ensembles will have a VERY SPECIAL Final concert of the year on Monday May 13th. The program will
feature “Four Giants of Charleston Jazz” and will include performances by Lonnie Hamilton III, Charlton

Singleton, Robbie Madison and Demetrius Doctor. All of these folks have ties to our school. Lonnie Hamilton
was the band director at Bonds-Wilson HS (our campus) before becoming elected to County Council. Charlton
was the MS band director at the School of the Arts before Mrs. Reed, and he is an internationally known
performer. Robbie Madison and Demetrius Doctor are both performers in jazz and worship music. Robbie is
in music ministry at Seacoast Church (Mt. Pleasant), and Demetrius is the music minister at Royal Baptist just
around the corner. The location is tentatively planned for Royal Baptist. Details will be coming soon.
Band Camp dates have been set. August 5 – August 9.

Finally, the search for my replacement (again!) is almost complete. Dr. Cook hopes to have everything
wrapped up and an announcement very soon. I will tell you that the candidates this time are all experienced
high school directors with strong resumes and a proven track record of success in all areas of the band
curriculum.
